Especie endémica de Chile que crece desde Coquimbo a Los Lagos en el fondo de quebradas húmedas y a orillas de esteros y vertientes. En La Aurora crece en lugares más húmedos. Es un arbusto o arbolito perenne de hasta 5 m de altura por 3 a 4 m de diámetro con pequeñas hojas puntiagudas y coriáceas. Las flores salen de las axilas de las hojas y son solitarias, con suave perfume y de color blanco. Florece desde la primavera a fines del verano. El fruto es una baya negruzca comestible con varias semillas, de hasta 1 cm de diámetro, que madura desde el verano hasta comienzos del invierno.

Es de crecimiento rápido. Al tercer año alcanza 1,5 a 2 m de altura e inicia la floración. Necesita suelos húmedos con buen drenaje y luminosidad alta a media. Es ornamental por su follaje y flor. Además es interesante por el perfume que exhalan tanto las flores como las hojas.

It is a species endemic to Chile growing from Coquimbo to Los Lagos at the bottom of wet ravines and on the banks of streams and springs. In La Aurora it grows in wetter areas. It is a shrub or small evergreen tree up to 5 m in height by 3 to 4 m in diameter with small, pointed, leathery leaves. The flowers develop from the axils of the leaves and are solitary, white and have a delicate perfume. It blooms from spring to late summer. The fruit is a black edible berry, up to 1 cm in diameter, with several seeds, that ripens from summer to early winter.

Growth is rapid. In the third year it reaches 1.5 to 2 m in height and initiates flowering. It needs moist soils with good drainage and high to average luminosity. It is ornamental because of its foliage and flowers, and is also interesting due to the perfume that both flowers and leaves exhale.
